“Every man at some point in his life is gonna lose a battle. He’s gonna fight and he’s gonna lose But what makes him a man, is that in the midst of that battle he does not lose himself.”
I would have to say that this applies in all realms of life and specifically even HS Athletics. We opened our season with a 1-0 win over a cross town rival and then fell in week 2. I’ve always been a big believer in the process. Winning is a huge element of HS sports, however you can’t always win. So what is there to gain out of victory or even defeat? There’s a lesson and they come in many different forms. When you win, what does your body language look like, what does your mentality look like? What is your response when you suffer defeat? Do you hang your head or do you accept the lesson and strive to work even harder?
The answer to those questions vary by personality and player! After suffering our first loss on the year, I saw the frustration in the eyes of players. Nobody likes to lose, but I reassured them that we have plenty of room to get better, keep grinding, and the rest will take care of itself. We must not lose sight of our mission as coaches, players, people in the game of football, and life itself. We will suffer defeats, but we will also achieve victory. We must not lose our self in the moment of adversity!
That’s the message for the week, be sure to check back next week for the new weekly message.
